He films himself slowly undressing for bed. Every day, and then labels the tape and files it away in a box in the basement. He’s on his third box.

The next morning we slept in and then went to find bacon and coffee at the diner around the block. Herman ordered a hot chocolate with too much whipped cream piled high and dripping over the edges. We all ate too much, hoping food would make the headache go away.

When we were going through his things we found the box of unwatched undressing videos. We watched one before bedtime each night for the next three years, a sort of daily silent memorial service.

I wasn’t the mother I don’t think, but somehow that was my kid. and there were sunglasses. but my kid was cool. she was aloof about the whole thing.

He was ordering pills over the internet from Canada.

The medication helped him stop washing his hands and counting the wood grains in the floor, but he also lost interest in her body.
